After 53 years of silence, the United States and Cuba finally reestablished diplomatic relations in December 2014.

As the American embargo proved its inefficiency to overthrow the Castros, Barack Obama opted for a different approach. Even if that meant sacrificing core American principles on the short term.

His bet ? The United States’ soft power will eventually vanquish the Castro regime. As politics is never far away from policy, Barack Obama knows the new generation of Cuban-Americans living in Florida and leaning towards the Democratic Party desires that change.

However, this normalization process remains very fragile.
