 Renaissance  City

Once the “Automotive Capital of the World”, the city of Detroit in Michigan went bankrupt 3 years ago.

After 30 years of deindustrialization, the 2008 financial crises strikes the final blow to “Motor City” and its $18 billion debt. General Motors, Ford, Chrysler: they are all a distant memory. Between 2000 and 2010, the city lost 25% of its residents, due to rising crime and unemployment.

But for a few years, Detroit has been rising from the ashes. Community gardens have flourished in many neighborhoods, start-ups and young entrepreneurs have settled in vacant buildings, and art and music festivals have made Detroit one of the most vibrant cities in the US.

“Murals in the market”, a street-art festival created in 2015 and held in September, illustrates this Renaissance.
